Certified seed potatoes

Seed is the biggest single cost in a potato crop — and the biggest determinant of your yield. We market and distribute top quality open and permission-contracted varieties, selected on disease status, physiological stage, size and vigour.

Ready for the land

Graded, cured and correctly sprouted seed goes into the ground with even emergence and strong early vigour — the foundation of a uniform, high-yielding crop.

In the field

Our teams and the growers we supply plant with care — correct spacing, correct depth and correctly sprouted seed — because a uniform stand is decided in the first week.

Irrigation

From centre pivots to draglines, we help plan irrigation scheduling around tuber initiation and bulking so every millimetre of water turns into yield.

Agronomy support

Soil and nutrition planning, irrigation scheduling, blight strategy and crop scouting — practical advice from emergence right through to natural foliage die-back.

Farmer training

Hands-on training in seed handling, sprouting, spray programmes, harvest timing, curing, grading and storage — on your farm or as a group short course.

Who we are

Seed is the single biggest decision of your potato season.

From our complex in Msasa, Harare, we multiply tissue-culture stock through carefully managed field generations, then grade, cure and store it under cold-chain conditions. The result is seed that emerges evenly, resists disease pressure and carries yield right through to harvest.

  • Disease-free tissue-culture parent material
  • Independent field inspection and certification
  • Cold-chain storage and physiological ageing
  • Free agronomy advisory for every order

What we do

Three services, one goal: a profitable potato crop

We sell certified seed potatoes, consult on potato production, and train farmers to get the most out of every hectare.

Seed potato sales

Agricultural consultancy

Independent advice on the whole potato enterprise.

Our agronomists work with commercial estates, emerging farmers and farmer groups to plan and troubleshoot potato production. We interpret soil analyses, build fertiliser and irrigation programmes, design rotations, diagnose disease and pest pressure in the field, and cost the season so you know your break-even before you plant.

  • Variety choice matched to your soils, season and target market
  • Nutrition, irrigation and land-preparation planning
  • Blight strategy, disease diagnosis and crop budgets

Farmer training

Practical skills transfer, on the farm and in groups.

We run hands-on training for individual growers, cooperatives, schemes and NGO programmes — covering seed handling and sprouting, planting technique, spray programmes, harvest timing, curing, grading and storage. Sessions are run on-site as field days or as structured short courses, with follow-up visits through the season.

  • Field days and on-farm demonstration plots
  • Short courses for cooperatives, schemes and NGO projects
  • Seed handling, spraying, harvesting, grading and storage

Our varieties

Seed potatoes are more valuable than gold

Not only because seed is the greatest proportion of your production cost, but because its quality decides your yield. We market and distribute the varieties most in demand in Zimbabwe — here is what each one does in the field and in the pot.

Mondial

Licensed

Big tubers; skin must be fully set before harvest

Best used as
Table potato, long-term storage
Flower
Uniform emergence with good foliage development
Dormancy
Suitable for long-term storage
Growth period
Grows on all soil types; plant with small white buds, pre-sprouting advances the crop
Resistance
Good drought tolerance
Susceptible to
Moderately susceptible to bruising; preventive spraying against Phytophthora advised; keep soil moist to prevent common scab

Grower advice: fertilise to soil analysis — 175 kg N/ha incl. soil supply, 2/3 before planting and 1/3 as top dressing, with standard potassium and phosphate. Use hardened sprouts, apply a nematicide on light soils, and reduce drop heights at harvest to avoid damage.

Valour

Licensed

Oval, uniform tubers with smooth skin and shallow eyes

Best used as
Fresh market, all-round table use
Flower
Vigorous, well-covering foliage
Dormancy
Medium to long — stores well
Growth period
Medium to late maturing with strong yield potential
Resistance
Good general robustness in the field
Susceptible to
Follow a standard blight spray programme

A dependable, high-yielding variety prized for attractive, uniform tubers and good keeping quality — ask our agronomists for a seed rate and fertiliser plan for your soils.

BP1

Open variety

Oval, slightly flat, shallow eyes, white skin and flesh

Best used as
Table potato
Flower
Many blue flowers with snow-white edges
Dormancy
Short — 50–70 days at room temperature
Growth period
Medium to long, 90–110 days; strong upright grower
Resistance
Immune to wart diseases
Susceptible to
Late and Early Blight (controllable with a spray programme), moderately to virus, very susceptible to common scab

Good eating quality and solid cooking type, but tends to darken after cooking, so not recommended for chips. Sensitive to cold — do not plant or store below 4 °C.

Up to Date

Open variety

Oval, slightly flat, shallow eyes, white skin, cream flesh

Best used as
All-round, excellent for French fries
Flower
Fair amount of light purple-pink flowers
Dormancy
Short — 50–70 days from foliage death
Growth period
Medium to long, 90–110 days; tall, semi-erect, spreading
Resistance
Moderate resistance to external damage
Susceptible to
Very susceptible to Early and Late Blight; susceptible to wart diseases

A powdery cooking type and a firm favourite with homemakers — it does not normally discolour after cooking. Internal quality weakens within 30 days of natural foliage death.

Fianna

Fresh market and processing
Flower
White

Fairly firm to floury with a high relative density, suited to chips and frozen chips. Its big advantage is dual use — fresh market and processing.

Mnandi

Open variety

Oval, smooth pale-yellow skin and flesh, shallow eyes

Best used as
Table potato
Flower
Many snow-white flowers
Dormancy
Medium to long — about 70 days from burn off
Growth period
Medium to long, 90–110 days; tall, erect, dense cover
Resistance
Good against Early and Late Blight, Potato Leaf Roll Virus and PVY; medium to common scab
Susceptible to
Low susceptibility to Blackleg under adverse conditions

A floury cooking type of good eating quality with high, stable yield potential across locations and seasons. Low dry matter, so not suited to processing.
